The EU is aiming to reduce Europe's annual primary energy consumption by 20% by 2020. Several measures to increase efficiency have been introduced at all stages of the energy chain, including final consumption at product level.

The EU's approach regarding products is two-fold; minimum energy efficiency requirements through eco-design and energy labelling.

On 6 July 2005 the EU adopted the Directive 2005/32/EC on eco-design, i.e. the EuP Directive, establishing a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for energy-using products. On 21 October 2009, the EU adopted the revised Directive 2009/125/EC on eco-design, i.e. the ErP Directive: Directive 2009/125/EC of 21 October 2009 establishing a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for energy-related products

The ErP Directive sets a framework for eco-design requirements. However, product specific requirements are set by ErP Implementing Measures, i.e. mainly Regulations.

A number of ErP Implementing Measures regulate products sold by NEC. All NEC Companies in Europe are committed to complying with the relevant product requirements, including energy efficiency minimum requirements, energy consumption information requirements etc.
